Check if your Android phone is patched against the 'Master Key' exploit with this app

Check if your Android phone is patched against the 'Master Key' exploit with this app
After discovering a longstanding exploit in Android firmware dating back to version 1.6 that allowed malicious developers to circumvent software security measures, Bluebox Security released an Android app this week for users to check whether their phone is still vulnerable to the exploit. Since Bluebox's report last week, Google acknowledged the issue and released a patch that it says is in the hands of OEMs and already being pushed out by certain manufacturers (Samsung, for one). The app is thankfully free, and should provide some much-needed reassurance to most Android users. Head to the source link below to snag it for yourself.

Virgin Media launches Play Games portal for TiVo

Virgin Media launches Play Games portal for TiVo
Many of us don't see TiVos as game consoles, but Virgin Media would beg to differ -- there have been over a million game sessions this year on its edition of the DVR. Accordingly, it just launched a Play Games portal to court this growing audience. Besides putting games in one handy location, the hub saves game states and ranks favorite titles. Virgin is also recruiting more developers to expand Play Games' fledgling catalog. While the casual gaming focus is unlikely to stop serious players from pre-ordering an Xbox One or PS4, it may be enough to keep TiVo owners on the couch long after their favorite show is over.

Virgin Media invites TV customers to come Play Games
05 Jul 2013
* Virgin Media unveils TiVo® games portal and opens doors for developers
Virgin Media today announced the launch of a new casual TV gaming portal, Play Games. Available to its 1.5 million TiVo customers, the newly designed portal presents a wide variety of casual games that can be played directly on the TV. Play Games includes enhanced levels of player recommendation, personalisation and content discovery.
With Virgin TV customers racking up more than one million game plays on TiVo this year already, Virgin Media is seeking more developers to join its platform. Creators of casual games are being encouraged to work through Two Way Media, Virgin Media's app development partner, to integrate, test, host, launch and monetise games on TiVo using its game framework which can make Flash games ready for the platform in under a week.
Virgin Media's new portal now allows players to save and track progress through games and automatically ranks the ones they most frequently play, making them easier to find.
New games are scheduled to be launched over the coming months, enabling Virgin Media customers to play more of the kinds of games they love on other devices without the need for a second screen. Current games include Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Scooby's Creepy Cake Factory, with two new games, Mahjong and Darts Darts Darts, now available.
Commenting on the launch, Virgin Media's Charlotte Reece, said: "The introduction of Play Games will give causal gaming a great new look on TiVo and the addition of extra games will add even more entertainment to what is the UK's most advanced connected TV service. With 1.5 million households across the country already enjoying all that TiVo has to offer, we're giving developers access to a whole new audience and the chance to bring new ideas and even more fun to home entertainment."
Two Way Media chief executive James Turner said: "Virgin Media's TiVo platform makes it very easy for their customers to find and play games, and their growing subscriber base provides an excellent opportunity for developers to generate meaningful revenues from their games."

Firefox OS hands-on: Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open (video)

Firefox OS hands-on: Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open
We've crossed paths with Firefox OS before, but today marks the first time we've played with handsets running the final build of Mozilla's mobile software. The Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open you see above are the same hardware we saw at MWC earlier this year -- in fact, the latter just launched in Spain on Telefónica for €69 ($90) contract-free including €30 ($39) of airtime for prepaid customers. We took both phones for a brief spin and immediately noticed a slight improvement in performance. Unfortunately, there's still a significant amount of lag in the UI, especially when scrolling through web pages and navigating the app tray. Website also take a while to load, even when connecting over Wi-Fi. Then again, what do you expect for €69? Check out the gallery below and hit the break to watch our hands-on video.
Note: the ZTE Open we handled was for Movistar (a Telefónica brand) and is launching today for €69 (not €63 as mentioned in our video).

Mozilla and Partners Prepare to Launch First Firefox OS Smartphones!
First Open Web Devices Powered by Firefox OS Make Smartphones More Accessible; Regional announcements coming soon
Mountain View, Calif. – July 1, 2013 – Mozilla, the mission-based organization dedicated to keeping the power of the Web in people's hands, today announced that the regional launches of Firefox OS smartphones will begin soon. Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica will release the first Firefox OS devices, the ALCATEL ONE TOUCH Fire and the ZTE Open, soon. Individual partners will announce specifics about launches in each market soon.
Firefox OS Features
Firefox OS smartphones are the first devices powered completely by Web technologies and offer everything you expect from a smartphone while also delivering new features to give you a personal experience that is unmatched by any other phone.
Firefox OS includes all the things people need from a smartphone out of the box – calls, messaging, email, camera and more – as well as the things you wish a smartphone offered. Firefox OS also includes built-in social features with Facebook and Twitter, HERE Maps with offline capabilities and smart walking, driving and public transit directions, much-loved features like the Firefox Web browser, a new ability to discover one-time use and downloadable apps, Firefox Marketplace and much more.
Firefox OS features a brand new concept for smartphones – an adaptive app search that literally transforms the phone to meet your needs at any moment, without the need to download anything. Simply swipe to the right on your Firefox OS phone and start to type what you are interested in to get a whole new customized phone experience based on your needs instantly.
For example, search for your favorite music artist and get results to buy your favorite song, concert tickets or even listen to your favorite song instantly. Making it possible for you to create these one-time use or downloadable apps on demand gives you a completely customized experience and helps you get the exact content you want, when you want it.
"The launch of Firefox OS marks an incredibly exciting time for the Web. Firefox OS powers the first smartphones built entirely on Web technologies and will stimulate an inspiring new wave of innovation for the Web," says Jay Sullivan, Mozilla Chief Operating Officer. "We are proud to deliver an experience for first time smartphone users that will delight them and really put the power of the Web in people's hands."
Firefox OS phones come with Firefox Marketplace, which unleashes the power of HTML5 apps on mobile. Firefox Marketplace has popular global apps you want and relevant local apps you need. Firefox Marketplace offers apps in categories like games, news and media, music and audio, business and productivity so you can find an app for whatever you want – even local and niche topics. Firefox Marketplace includes popular apps such as AccuWeather, EA games like Poppit, Facebook, Nokia HERE Maps, SoundCloud, Terra, Time Out, TMZ and Twitter as well as personally tailored and local apps that will differ by region.
Firefox OS is an extension of the Firefox desktop and mobile browsing experience that hundreds of millions of people know and love, so you can expect all the security, privacy, customization and user control Firefox always delivers.
With more than 20 hardware and operator partners around the world, Firefox OS is filling the need for a fully adaptable, unconstrained mobile platform to deliver an innovative and customizable mobile Web experience that people are missing today. The world is waiting for a more attainable smartphone experience; only 21 percent of global mobile subscribers have smartphones, according to Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
"Operators, OEMs, and developers are growing ever more interested in the emergence of a truly viable alternative mobile platform that offers them new economic opportunities independent of today's incumbents," said John Jackson, Research Vice President for IDC. "Such a platform will have to meet challenging requirements in terms of robustness, scale, and openness. Mozilla and its partners are now moving definitively into the first wave of Firefox OS distribution. One of our recent surveys found Firefox OS to be more compelling to developers over Tizen, Blackberry and Kindle Fire, despite no commercial products being available yet. It is clear that influential members of the operator, OEM, and developer communities at both global and hyper-local levels see the potential of Mozilla's Firefox OS to be that next platform."
Telenor will launch their first Firefox OS phones in Central and Eastern Europe this year. Firefox OS phones will launch in more markets later this year.
Quote from Deutsche Telekom
"We are excited that with the upcoming launch in Poland Deutsche Telekom is leading the go to market for the Firefox OS mobile device", says Claudia Nemat, Board member for Europe and Technology at Deutsche Telekom. "The launch of the first Firefox smartphones in Europe is an important step on the way to more innovation and to more competition between the different ecosystems. We rely on open platforms because we want to create freedom of choice on behalf of our customers."
You can check out a video demo here: http://youtu.be/Iu8q-oISbas
Quote from Telefonica
José María Álvarez Palette, Chief Operating Officer of Telefónica said, "We believe that smartphones need to be more open and that the Web is the platform for making this possible. Consumers should not be locked to any one system but have the choice to consume the content they want and the flexibility to be able to take it with them when they change devices. This week marks a key turning point for the industry as we launch the first commercial Firefox OS devices in Spain. This is just the beginning as we bring Firefox OS to more and more of our markets across an expanding range of smartphones."
Quote from ZTE
"We are honored to partner with Telefonica and Mozilla to launch our first Firefox OS phone, the ZTE Open. Packed with powerful features, it's totally a new experience for smartphone users. As one of the top five smartphone manufacturers in the world, ZTE is devoted to provide more options for global customers and let everyone enjoy splendid life via advanced technology." said Mr.Dai Wenhong, VP of ZTE Corporation.

Skype for Android gets redesigned as app hits 100 million installs

Skype for Android gets an Windows Phoneinspired redesign, as app hits 100 million installs
Skype's starting off July with the release of a brand new version of its Android app. The overhauled 4.0 update borrows a good deal from the Microsoft-owned VoIP company's Windows 8 app, bringing conversations to the top. Log in, and you'll see recent chats -- from there, you can give one a tap to replay. You can also start a fresh one with a swipe and a tap on a contact name. Skype's promising a faster and more reliable app this time out, released as the Android version passes 100 million installs. Check out a celebratory video after the break.

Vine app now available on Kindle Fire

After releasing on the Google Play Store recently, the Vine app is now available on Kindle Fire. The app requires Android 4.0 and above, so can work on every version of the Kindle Fire, except for the very first model.

For those who are not aware, Vine is a new social networking service for sharing short, six second videos. It used to be known as the Instagram of videos, until recently when Instagram itself added support for videos. The Vine app for Kindle Fire is the first tablet version of the app, as it is only available on smartphones on iOS and Android. Having said that, the UI is similar to the Play Store version of the app and not really optimized for the big screen as such.
The launch of the Vine app for Kindle Fire comes as a surprise, since the app took over four months to arrive on Android after its iOS debut. With Instagram now quickly becoming the preferred choice for sharing videos, Vine seems to be more than willing to expand to other platforms. Who knows, we may see a Windows Phone version of Vine shortly.

Digg Reader web, iOS apps are open for the public

As we stand on the precipice of the shutdown of Google Reader the search for replacement RSS clients is more frantic than ever, and now Digg has opened access to its app for any users interested. Currently available on the web and as an iOS app (Android coming soon), importing ones Google account is just a few mouse clicks away. The experience as it exists now is pretty barebones, and Digg says it plans to add a "View unread items only" option, "Mark as unread" button and the always crucial "accurate" unread counts for feeds and folders in the near future. Hit the source link below to give it a shot, and then let us know if it's a contender for the throne.

Yep, Windows 8.1 RT looks just like regular Windows 8.1, performance hasn't changed

When we got hands-on with the Windows 8.1 preview earlier this week, it was on a Surface Pro -- i.e., an x86 PC running full Windows. Until today, though, we hadn't had a chance to try the software on a device running Windows RT. Well, fortunately for us, Microsoft has a row full of freshly updated Surface RT units on display here at Build, so we took the opportunity poke around a little. As you'd expect, Windows RT 8.1 has all the trappings of the full Windows version, including an always-there Start button and new apps like Food & Drink and Health & Fitness. What's sort of interesting is that you can boot to the desktop here as well, just as you would on Windows 8.1. (We say "interesting" because, well, how urgently do you need the desktop on RT anyway?) The desktop also still comes with Office apps pinned to the Taskbar, in case you were wondering.
Performance seems much the same as before, particularly because we were handling last year's Surface RT, which still ships with a Tegra 3 SoC. Browsing and loading tabs in IE11 feels snappy but then again, IE11 was supposed to be a tick faster than IE10. Overall, navigating the OS can still feel slightly sluggish, but the build we tried is at least stable. Other than that, it looks like we'll have to wait for some new ARM chips before we can revisit performance in Windows RT. Until then, don't expect us to write another 4,000 words on the subject.

Renesas to shutter the modem business it acquired from Nokia in 2010

Renesas to shutter the modem business it acquired from Nokia in 2010
Today, Renesas is announcing that it's going to "discontinue" the wireless unit it acquired from Nokia. Finnish state media outlet YLE is reporting that all 808 of Renesas' employees in Finland will be let go, of which more than two-thirds are located in the northern city of Oulu. Three years ago, Nokia decided to focus on designing and manufacturing mobile phones. It sold its wireless modem division to the Japanese semiconductor firm Renesas for roughly $200 million. The idea was, with wireless modem R&D moved out of the way, the company could concentrate on developing blockbuster handsets.
Unfortunately, the sale took place half a year before Android phones outsold Symbian devices for the first time and Nokia announced that it was going to switch to Windows Phone -- this put Renesas in the awkward position of being a modem supplier to a company with collapsing sales. Nokia Siemens Networks has large offices in the same city where most of Renesas' employees are located. Though, engineers looking for a change of scenery might want to head south to Espoo where Samsung just opened its own R&D center.

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer
Lounging around in the sun is great and all, but what to do on a rainy day? One option is to get some TV time in, and Sky's got a few updates to share that might tempt you in front of a screen on dreary afternoons. At some point this summer, shows from Fox, Universal and SyFy will be available on Sky's On Demand service, as well as content from Disney if you're signed up for the Entertainment Extra package. Mobile apps will be getting a makeover, with "enhanced navigation" and a new design including bigger thumbnails when cruising through the VOD library. The Sky Go Xbox 360 app will also be updated to bring it in line with Microsoft's UI style. Furthermore, Sky Multiroom subscribers will get access to Sky Go Extra, which allows you to download content in addition to streaming, at no extra cost in early July. Vitamin D's overrated anyways.

Watching on demand and on the go with Sky to get bigger and better this summer

Sky TV is getting bigger and better this summer, with the launch of four new Catch Up TV channels, a new look for Sky Go and new bonus access to Sky Go Extra for Sky Multiroom customers, giving them the option to download shows to watch on offline at no extra cost.
The UK's biggest Catch Up service gets even bigger
From later this summer, the UK's biggest Catch Up TV service is set to get even bigger with catch up TV from Fox, Universal and SyFy launching on Sky on demand. Sky TV households taking the Entertainment Extra pack will be able to also enjoy Disney on demand at no extra cost. The new channels means that Sky now offers access to over 20 catch up channels, providing thousands of hours of great TV to enjoy whenever customers choose. On demand viewing continues to increase in popularity with over 2 million connected Sky customers enjoying both Catch Up and TV Box Sets. In the second week of June, the season finale of Games of Thrones saw 41,000 downloads in both SD and HD.

Sky Go gets a brand new look
Also coming later this summer, people watching on phones and tablets via Sky Go will get a new look app. The refreshed design includes enhanced navigation to make it even easier to find and watch more of your favourite shows, and bigger thumbnail images when you are browsing the On Demand library. The app will also be updated for Xbox users to give it the latest Microsoft user interface. Sky TV customers be able to use the new look app to access up to 39 channels on mobile and tablets, 14 of which were added in the last 12 months including Channel 4, More4, Disney, Cartoon Network, SyFy and Universal.

Sky Go Extra available to all Sky Multiroom customers
From early July, Sky Multiroom customers will enjoy even more flexibility over their TV viewing with bonus access to Sky Go Extra. Sky Multiroom customers currently get access to their Sky TV channels in other rooms of their house. Now for no additional monthly cost, customers with Sky Multiroom will be able to download big American dramas, home-grown TV shows and major sporting events to laptops, phones and tablets to watch offline whenever and wherever they want – in or out of their home*. To add Sky Go Extra to their subscription Sky Multiroom customers will simply need to update their account online at sky.com.

Luke Bradley-Jones, Director of TV Products, Sky comments: "This summer we're adding even more channels into what is already the UK's biggest catch up TV service. We're also making it easier to find something great to watch when out and about and at the same time giving our customers even more choice about different screens to watch on. It's all part of our commitment to offer the best TV and the best ways to watch, giving our customers even more choice and flexibility from their Sky TV."

To watch Sky on demand customers need to connect their Sky+ HD box to an internet connection.
